Addu reclamation project: Machinery arrived, ready to begin

The machinery and equipment needed for Addu City reclamation have been taken to the city, and preparations have been made to kick-start the project.

According to a Tweet by Hithadhoo Port Limited, the Cargo vessel ‘HC Melina’ arrived at the port on Saturday, carrying goods from Van Oord.

This is the Dutch company contracted to carry out the reclamation project of Addu City.

Van Oord has previously revealed plans to bring HMAM 318 dredger operated by the company to take the sand needed for reclamation.

Additionally, the company had provided assurances that this project will be completed within 18 months.

Under this project, 194 hectares of land will be reclaimed, as well as shore protection for an 11-kilometre area.

This includes 90 hectares from Hithadhoo, 23.3 hectares from Hulhumeedhoo and 76 from Maradhoo, Maradhoofeydhoo as well as some uninhabited islands for tourism purposes.
