Samples taken from cell where Faisal hung himself to be tested

National Integrity Commission (NIC), on Sunday, announced their decision to test the forensic samples taken from the cell where Aboobakr Faisal, 32, ADh. Fenfushi, hung himself in order to identify how had the opportunity to harm himself whilst under police custody.

Faisal, who was arrested in connection to the death of his wife, Nishama Mohamed, 28, HDh. Nolhivaram, was found hanging in a holding cell at a police station in an apparent suicide attempt.

Nishama was found dead in her home in HDh. Nolhivaram on the afternoon of December 10th. Faisal had initially fled to HDh. Kulhudhuffushi, before he turned himself into the local police and was subsequently arrested.

He was found hanging in a holding cell at the Kulhudhuffushi Police Station at approximately 11:15 pm last Monday. He was brought to Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital at approximately 11:40pm. A reliable source confirmed to Sun that Faisal’s heart was not beating when he was brought to the hospital. The source further stated that Faisal’s condition was critical, and he was being treated at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

A three-member team from NIC visit Kulhudhuffushi to investigate the scene. Some samples were taken from the cell, and statements were taken from individuals privy to the case.

An official from NIC told Sun on Sunday that during the one-day trip, the team had uncovered much evidence pertaining to the case.

“We have taken samples from the cell in different ways, Presently, efforts are underway to send the required samples for forensic testing. We also did interview some individuals from the island aware of the case. We are preparing to take statements from those required within this week,” the official said.

NIC said they are unable to specify a date their investigation can be completed.

Nishama’s family believes she was killed by her husband as she is a victim of domestic violence. She reportedly had visible injuries on her body.

A trustable source also confirmed to Sun that Faisal is a drug addict.

Nishama is survived by three young children.
