NIC urges public to file formal complaints instead of spreading unverified claims about enforcement agencies

The National Integrity Commission (NIC) has expressed concern over the spread of rumors on social media that create suspicion and misconception among the public about the work of law enforcement agencies in fulfilling their legal duties.

In a press release, the NIC said the efforts carried out by enforcement agencies are essential for the security of the country and its people. The commission therefore urged the public not to interfere in the work of these agencies, and instead to assist and cooperate in maintaining law and order.

The NIC noted that if an enforcement agency or an employee of such an agency is accused of acting against the law or regulations, there is a clear opportunity for the public to submit a request to the commission to investigate the matter.

“When law enforcement agencies and their personnel are accused of violating laws, regulations or prescribed procedures, the public is advised to submit the complaint, as required by law, to the Commission,” the NIC said.

The commission issued the statement after a photo of a female customs employee was circulated on social media with serious allegations regarding her legal responsibilities. A video also surfaced showing a female employee of the Male' City Council being abused and insulted while at work.

Customs has separately urged the public not to act in ways that could create doubt about its legal responsibilities. The agency said it is a mandatory duty to inspect goods and passengers entering the Maldives.

The NIC further reminded employees of enforcement agencies to continue performing their responsibilities within the legal framework. The commission also noted that spreading untrue information and infringing on the reputation of employees has become increasingly common in society.
