State Electric Company (STELCO)’s Managing Director Ahmed Shareef has joined Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

The main ruling party confirmed Shareef’s membership Sunday.

Shareef was recruited to MDP by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and his allies.

Shareef had previously been a member of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and had served as a PPM candidate on the Parliament, as Thimarafushi MP.

He later left PPM, and was appointed as a member of the Elections Commission (EC) in 2018. He was chairman of EC when PPM’s leader, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom lost his re-election bid the same year.

He resigned from EC in 2021, after which he was vocal in his criticism of Yameen.

Shareef was appointed STELCO’s MD in March.

Ahme Akram, who served as deputy chairman of the EC during Shareef’s tenure, has also joined MDP.
