Man who stormed police station, threatened to kill officer rearrested

The man police had been searching for storming Maafannu Police Station and threatening to kill one of the officers have been rearrested on Tuesday.

Mohamed Azhan Ismail, 31, Hulhumale’ Lot No. 11399, was arrested on Tuesday morning.

He was first arrested in connection to the case on September 18. When he was brought before the Criminal Court for a remand hearing on September 19, a judge granted Azhan release citing a violation of due process with respect to his arrest.

Last Sunday, police made an announcement appealing public’s help in locating Azhan following their unsuccessful attempts to locate him. He was arrested on Tuesday morning, under a court order.

A Police Spokesperson, disclosing no further details, said that the case was under further investigation.

Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed shared the details of the incident via a tweet on September.

Detailing that the man in question as affiliated with a known organized crime group in Maafannu district of Male’ City – CP Hameed said he barged into the Maafannu Police Station after another person affiliated with the same group was arrested on suspicion of robbery.

He also said more of the group’s members had gathered outside the police station after the incident.

The incident occurred after three off-duty Drug Enforcement Department (DED) officers were attacked with weapons by at least eight people in early September. CP Hameed said the attack was carried out by members of a known crime group in Henveiru district.
