President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Monday, has revealed plans to increase the allowance issued to persons with disabilities.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of ‘Viavathi Raajje’ conference held at L. Gan, President Solih noted that efforts were presently underway to formulate a registry for persons with disabilities.

“At the conclusion of this, by the will of god, the allowance issued to persons with disabilities will be increased,” he added.

At present, persons with disabilities are given a monthly allowance of MVR 2,000. By how much the allowance will be increased however, was disclosed by the president.

In 2019, a bill was submitted to the parliament by Dhangethi MP Colonel (Retired) Mohamed Nazim to amend the laws to increase the state issued allowance for persons with disabilities. However, back then, ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), had been against this.

During President Solih’s closing speech, he underscored the importance of continuous supply of medication to islands, so they may not face shortages. Noting that pharmacies of State Trading Organization (STO) were established across many islands – he stressed on the still existing need to carry out supply of medication to islands more efficiently.

Apart from this, the president also emphasized on the need for cooperation from councils in countering drug problems at islands.

“This issue (drugs) can be overcome. But, it can only be overcome by collaborative efforts in their own capacity by government authorities, councils and private individuals,” he had said.

The ‘Viavathi Raajje’ conference also saw the discussions regarding Women’s Development Committees (WDCs). With respect to the topic, President Solih said he believed WDCs should be dissolved, to be infused with local councils.

He said that WDCs would be able to produce results once a better working environment is created for them, and their concerns in executing their responsibilities are addressed including financial constraints.

“I believe we should think about making WDCs a body people are elected for fulltime work,” he added.

President Solih also spoke on the commencement of minibus service in Male’ City, and Male’ Streetscaping Project. He underscored not having received support from Male’ City Council for both projects initially. However, he said the council began rendering full cooperation following discussions at one table.

“Despite belonging to different political parties, please cooperate in providing such services to the people. I request everyone to work with the belief this is a matter for the island’s people,” he had said.
