Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s leader, former president Mohamed Nasheed has not decided to withdraw the resolution he submitted to the party’s congress regarding switching to a parliamentary system, according to Central Henveiru MP Ali Azim.

Azim made the statement in an interview to Sun on Sunday evening, following reports Nasheed had withdrawn the resolution.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih himself has asked Nasheed to withdraw the resolution.

However, both Azim and MDP’s former chairperson, West Henveiru MP Hassan Latheef confirm Nasheed has not decided to withdraw the resolution.

The congress is set to vote on debating on the resolution later Sunday.

Nasheed has repeatedly stressed the need to switch to a parliamentary system during the congress, which began Friday. He also hinted he will not remain with MDP in the 2023 presidential elections if a referendum on parliamentary system does not take place.

He said MDP would not win the upcoming presidential elections if the country does not switch to a parliamentary system.

However, President Solih said that now was not the time for such a big change, and asked Nasheed to withdraw his resolution.
