President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Friday, has stated that there has always been room for disagreements within Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) – despite which the party must move forward with the disagreements.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of MDP’s fourth congress – President Solih said that the party has always had room for disagreements and differing views.

“One person will not think as another person does. The ideas of one person will differ from the other person's too. MDP has always allowed room for this,” he had said.

President Solih said that despite disagreements and differing views – the only choice is to move forward along with them.

Speaking at tonight’s congress – the President described MDP as a political party that is with all Maldivian citizens working across all sectors.

He further stated that MDP was born based on changes that were needed – including changing the unjust, inhuman and oppressiveness the Maldives was under back then.

Noting that the party has achieved many significant milestones in its journey to date – President Solih added that there were many unaccomplished things, that were desired.

He also said that MDP must always remain as a party that walks on the path of the Islamic religion, that is nationalistic and always adhere to the party’s roots and regulations.

MDP’s fourth congress which commenced tonight and is set to continue for a three-day period. The agenda of the congress includes amendments proposed to the party’s constitution and a resolution submitted by the party’s leader, Mohamed Nasheed, regarding holding a constitutional referendum to change the governing system.
