Maldives Media Council (MMC) has issued a statement urging reporters to adhere to ethical standards in disseminating information.
In the statement on Sunday, MMC said that while the constitution guaranteed freedom of expression to all, the constitution also dictated that the freedom must be exercised with certain responsibilities.
MMC appealed to reporters and media outlets to pay special attention to adhering to Maldives Media Council’s laws and regulations, and local media standards, and ethical standards in exercising the right to freedom of expression.
The council warned that disseminating information, especially information which may encroach on the reputation or rights of an individual, without verifying it, would violate laws and regulations.
The council’s regulation compels reporters to obtain a comment from all parties involved before publishing articles, said the MMC.
MMC urges reporters and media outlets to ensure to media and ethical standards and verify information before publishing articles.
Information that is in violation of Islam and information that do not come from credible sources.
