Parliament passes to dissolve branches of the High Court

Parliament, on Monday, has passed the bill proposing amendments to Judicature Act – to dissolve the branches of the High Court established in the northern and southern regions of Maldives.

The bill submitted by Mathiveri MP Hassan Zareer, on behalf of the government, received the votes of 34 parliamentarians out of 73 that were in attendance.

Amendments included in the bill which were passed by Parliament:

•         Dissolving two branches of the High Court
•         Increasing the timeframe to appeal court verdicts to 30 days
•         Verdicts delivered out of powers granted to the court being invalid
•         Mandates making arrangements for employees working in the two branches of High Court to be given other jobs of the same level at other courts, the judicial sector or other authorities within 60 days after the amendment comes into force
•         Cases submitted, registered and ongoing at the two branches of High Court to be transferred to Male’ High Court.
