Parliament Speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed said on Monday evening that though it may look like the government enjoyed great support, it would be difficult to win the presidential election.

Nasheed, in a message to Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) national council’s Whatsapp group amid heightened tensions between the two factions within the party, criticized the government.

Nasheed said the government believed it enjoyed great support, but the government had done too much wrong to secure such great support.

He also accused the government of failure to admit mistakes.

Nasheed said he believed it would therefore be difficult for MDP to win the election.

“I believe it will be hard to get over 50 percent [of votes]. Too many mistakes have been made," he said.

In another message, Nasheed said 2022 was a “high risk year” with large debt repayments due, but the government failed to take that into consideration.

He also vowed to release the MMPRC investigative report.

Commenting on an image that suggested the failure of the Corruption and Asset Recovery Commission to investigate the MMPRC scandal involved influence from Nasheed’s faction, Nasheed said he had the investigative report, and would share it “if there’s any confusion”.

Nasheed said the report in question was written by the Corruption and Asset Recovery Commission.
