Over 1,800 pending cases in Criminal Court by new year

Statistics from Criminal Court revealed that 1,804 cases are pending in the court by the beginning of this year.

As per the records, by the beginning of 2021, there were 1,732 pending cases and 773 new cases were submitted. Within 2021, only 701 of those cases were closed, which made up just 27 percent of the total cases lodged.

This was a decline in the number of cases closed when compared to 2020. Within that year, a total of 1,339 cases were closed.

Additionally, the figures show that 2,722 people arrested on criminal charges were brought into court to make a decision on their remand. From this, the court had ordered to release of 14 percent of people.

Furthermore, in 2021, 405 search warrants, 399 arrest warrants, 112 orders to withhold passports and other 525 warrants were issued from the court.

 

Meanwhile, despite scheduling 9,9973 hearings, 49 percent of those were cancelled. Criminal Court’s records show that only 5,121 hearings were held in the court during 2021.
