Higher Education Ministry has announced the decision to offer loans to students of the Asian Academy of Aeronautics (AAA) who enroll at the Maldivian Aviation Academy – a joint venture between the national airline – Maldivian - and the Maldives National University (MNU) to train pilots.

The Maldivian Aviation Academy, operated by a top Czech aviation school, was inaugurated earlier this week – offering hope to AAA’s students who have had their training disrupted due to prolonged courses and various other management issues.

The academy has opened enrollment.

The Maldivian Aviation Academy will be taking in 80 students per year. 30 spots have been offered for the first batch.

The academy has stated that AAA’s students will be given special priority.

The first course the academy is offering is a two-month refresher program.

In a press conference on Thursday morning, Higher Education Minister Dr. Ibrahim Hassan said the fee for the refresher program is USD 1,500 (MVR 23,175).

Ibrahim said the government will issue loans to AAA students who have had their training disrupted in order to pay the fee.

“The Ministry of Higher Education will issue the USD 1,500 needed for the Island Aviation’s refresher course to AAA’s students who were unable to complete their course in the form of a loan,” he said.

He said the government will arrange additional financing needed once the refresher course is done.
