Wearing seatbelts have been made mandatory for drivers and passengers of four-wheeled vehicles under specific circumstances.

Transport Ministry announced on Thursday that starting next year, the driver as well as the passenger on the front seat of four-wheeled vehicles on roads with a speed limit higher than 30 kilometers per hour will need to wear seatbelts.

The regulation takes effect on January 1.

The change in regulation comes after Transport Minister Aishath Nahula told the Parliament the government was discussing making seatbelts compulsory back in November.
