Workshop commences on combating terrorism and extremism

A workshop has commenced targeting religious scholars and education sector workers on creating awareness regarding the role they plan in the creation of a peaceful society free from terrorism and extremism.

Maldives National Defense Force’s (MNDF) Media Office Hana Mohamed stated that the workshop will focus on developing human resources of government offices and civil organizations that undertake such tasks.

The workshop is titled ‘The International Program for Combating and Extremism and Terrorism’, which is conducted by the National Counter-Terrorism Center in collaboration with Saudi Arabia’s Naif Arab University for Security Sciences. The workshop will prolong for a period of four days – starting today.

Hana further detailed that the first two days of the workshop will see participation from some religious scholars, members of the 241 Committee and senior officials working in the education sector. The remaining two days will see the participation of representatives from some government officers and non-governmental organizations.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the workshop, Higher Education Minister Dr. Ibrahim Hassan stated that the use of the internet and social media to recruit members for terrorist organizations and plan terror attacks should be paid attention to by everybody. He then stressed the importance of teaching youths critical thinking skills, anti-violence and laws and human rights within the education system.

All sessions of the workshop will be conducted by experts from Naif Arab University for Security Sciences.
