16 emergency incidents last week, mostly fires

Statistics released by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) show that firefighters responded to 16 emergency incidents last week, with the majority involving fires.

According to the data, MNDF firefighters attended 13 separate fire incidents during the week. Military personnel also responded to two medical evacuation cases involving MNDF vessels, as well as two hazardous materials (Hazmat) incidents.

Of the 16 emergencies recorded up to last Saturday, 12 occurred in the Greater Malé Region, while the remaining four were reported in the southern region.

Two major emergencies were reported during the week. Early Monday morning, a gas cylinder explosion triggered a dangerous fire at a residence in Malé, injuring four people. As a result, temporary accommodation was arranged for 41 residents in the surrounding area.

In a separate incident last Thursday, a gas leak at a residence in Malé claimed the life of a woman. A 19-year-old woman who was critically injured in the incident remains under medical care.
