Seafarers urged to wear life jackets as rough seas forecast

The Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has called on travelers to wear life jackets and exercise heightened caution amid forecasts of rough sea conditions.

While schools are currently on mid-term break, the Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has forecasted strong winds and rough seas over the weekend.

In a statement issued to the media, the MNDF urged all seafarers to remain vigilant and closely monitor prevailing weather conditions.

The authority advised against undertaking any voyages without first notifying the relevant authorities. It also stressed the need for vessels to be equipped with functional life jackets, communication equipment, and bilge pumps.

Owners of cargo vessels have been urged to ensure that their vessels remain within prescribed load limits and that all cargo is properly secured. Passengers, meanwhile, have been strongly advised to wear life jackets and remain highly vigilant throughout their journeys.

Organizers of diving and other water sports activities have also been advised to closely monitor weather updates. The MNDF cautioned against conducting travel or water sports during periods where Met Office has issued Yellow or Orange alerts.

The safety advisory comes as the Met Office forecasts widespread rainfall and rough seas across several parts of the country on Friday. Authorities continue to urge the public to take all necessary precautions when adverse weather conditions prevail.
