Fisheries Ministry has made the decision to celebrate Fishermen’s Day 2021 in Gaafaru, a residential island located in K. Atoll.

Fisheries Ministry announced in a statement this Sunday that the decision to mark National Fishermen’s Day in Gaafaru was made to celebrate the occasion in an island close to the capital, Male’ City, as a cost-cutting measure in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

That was also the reason for the decision against publicly opening applications for islands that wish to host the celebrations this year, said the ministry.

Fisheries Ministry said the decision to hold the celebrations in Gaafaru was made following discussions with the local council.

Fishermen’s Day last year was celebrated virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Maldives celebrates Fishermen’s Day on December 10. The country will mark its 41st Fishermen’s Day this year.
