Land bill sent to parliamentary committee for review

The bill to amend the Land Act to empower local councils to issue land has been accepted into the Parliament and sent to the Decentralization Committee for review.

The government bill – sponsored by Mathiveri MP Hassan Zareer – is designed to remedy contradictions between the Land Act and the Decentralization Act.

The bill was accepted into the Parliament for consideration with the vote of 42 parliamentarians on Monday afternoon. No parliamentarians voted against the bill.

The passage of the bills with grant additional powers to local councils – including the power to sell or lease land under the jurisdiction of councils in accordance with land use plans.

According to the bill, the second party which buys or leases land will be registered the rights to the land in accordance with the agreement.
