PG to appeal against minor allegedly involved in murder of Anas

The Prosecutor General's Office has decided to appeal in the case of the minor charged with the murder of Mohamed Anas in 2017, after the Juvenile Court ruled that the minor was not guilty. 

Anas, from Fenfiyaazuge, R. Meedhoo was murdered in 2017, after a group of eight on four motorcycles chased him into the Litus Service Center, and attacked him with sharp objects. Medical examiners stated that Anas was stabbed 24 times by his attackers inside the center. 

Eight people were charged in the case. Those charged with murder are: 

• Ahmed Zayan, from Asurumaage, Lh. Kurendhoo
• Usman Shareef from M. Dhimishgu
• Afrah Abdul Razzaq from M. Lonumidhilige
• An individual who was underaged during the time of the crime

Those charged being an accessory to murder are:

• Junaih Abdullah from Nannaarige, L. Gan
• Hassan Mahfooz from Vestonvilla, S. Feydhoo
• Simah Moosa, Dhafthar 1746
• Mohamed Saaz, from Gulfaamge, Th. Kinbidhoo

The minor's case was submitted to the Juvenile Court, while others were charged in the Criminal Court. The Juvenile Court ruled that the minor was not guilty of the crime. 

The PG Office stated to Sun today that the not guilty verdict is to be appealed to the High Court, which will be done next week. 

The Juvenile Court had ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove that the accused was present at the scene of the crime when the crime occurred. The court also ruled that witness statements had shown that the accused was present in other locations during the time of the crime. 

The identity of the accused remains undisclosed due to the child rights laws of the Maldives. 

 The cases of the remaining seven are still underway in the Criminal Court.
