The Prosecutor General’s Office says it attended 1,150 hearings in May.

According to figures released on Monday, the office attended 1,150 hearings as of May, a sharp drop from the 2,710 hearings attended in April.

The PGO received 143 cases in May. Investigative agencies were advised 447 times, and 263 charges were filed in court.

In comparison, the office received 190 cases in April, issued 552 advisories to investigative agencies, and filed 232 charges. Lawyers attended 2,710 hearings that month.

It is noteworthy that an audit of prosecutorial work carried out between 2018 and 2021 found that the PGO did not regularly review Criminal Court remand orders for suspects detained indefinitely pending trial.

The government has since stated that it is working to identify a legal remedy to address the issue of prolonged pre‑trial detention.
