Maldives Transport and Contract Company (MTCC) has completed work on building a medical facility in G. Dh. Thinadhoo to treat COVID-19 patients who require medical treatment.

MTCC announced on Wednesday that the company completed the project within 20 days, and handed it over to the National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Ministry.

MTCC was contracted to build the medical facility on September 25.

The facility has 22 beds, including Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds.

Authorities made the decision to build a COVID-19 medical facility in Thinadhoo after 68-year-old COVID-19 patient from Thinadhoo who was being transferred to the COVID-19 medical facility built in G. A. Vilingili to serve as a regional facility, was barred from entering the island by a group of local protesters in late August.

The patient was later transferred to the COVID-19 medical facility in Hulhumale’ on a chartered seaplane.

The incident sparked widespread outrage and calls for the medical facility to be relocated to another island in the region.

However, COVID-19 patients from the region were later treated at the facility in Vilingili without any resistance from local residents.
