Locals taken hostage on island under development by migrants

Migrant workers protesting on an island under development has led to them taking some locals on the island hostage. 

The island where the workers are protesting is in the same lagoon as the island of B. Thulhaadhoo. The island under development is B. Bodufinolhu.

Sources have reported that the workers are protesting over unpaid wages. The migrants had even lit some properties on fire. They reportedly barred the local workers on the island from leaving.

A person who spoke with Sun from Thulhaadhoo said that some locals from the island had gone to the island under development after news of the altercations reached. The locals had gone to try and stop the violence. It is also reported that the locals departed on a boat and were armed with metal bars.

Police have confirmed that officers are now at the scene after reports of the incident were received.

Police arrived on the island armed with shields and riot control gear. 

A police media official said that an officer was injured during altercations on the island. The officer suffered fractures to the head among other injuries. He has now been taken to the B. Atoll Hospital. For treatment.
