LGA working to return 500 individuals to their islands

The Local Government Authority (LGA) has announced that it is preparing to transport 500 individuals to quarantine facilities in a bid to transport them to their residential islands.

The individuals had traveled to Male’ City for different purposes before a lockdown order was put in place in the capital due to the COVID-19 virus. Previously, 300 such individuals had been placed in quarantine facilities.

Home Minister Imran Abdulla has stated that arrangements to transport these individuals to their islands would be made once the 14-day quarantine period was completed.

In a press conference today, LGA Director General Adam Shareef stated that a master list to transport people to their residential islands was being formed.

“We are planning to quarantine 500 individuals. I have received information that the quarantine facilities are now ready. Within the next two or three days, the individuals would be transported to these facilities.” Says Adam Shareef.

Work is also being done to transport others stranded in the capital. Adam Shareef stated that a lot of difficulties were faced due to confusion over who these individuals should report to in order to travel back to their home islands. Adam Shareef noted that collaborative efforts with different institutions have identified more than 5000 such individuals who wished to return to their islands.

These included people who had come to Male’ for short trips, medical purposes and those who find it difficult to live in Male’ due to the current condition.

1400such individuals had traveled to Male’ for medical purposes while 363 individuals are in the capital after traveling from resorts. 3258 other individuals who traveled for other purposes have also been identified, says Adam Shareef.
