Education Ministry, on Monday, ordered the suspension of tuition classes and Quran classes as a measure to prevent a COVID-19 outbreak in Maldives.

Education Ministry announced its decision in a circular sent to all schools, tuition centers, Quran centers, and local councils.

The ministry has urged parents against sending children to such classes, and teachers against holding any face-to-face classes during the duration which the schools will remain closed.

The decision applies to all tuition centers, individual tuition classes, Quran classes, and other educational classes.

It comes after the Director General of Public Health ordered the suspension of all tuition and Quran classes for a one-week period, effective from March 22.

13 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Maldives, all of whom are foreign nationals who were either working or vacationing in resorts. Of the 13 people, five were from Kuredu Island Resort, two from Island Safari-1, two from Sandies Bathala, two from Kuramathi Island Resort, and two from Anantara Dhigu.

Maldives has a 30-day state of public health emergency in place, under which the Director General of Public Health has imposed several precautionary measures, including the temporary closure of all schools, universities, colleges, and training institutes.
