23-year-old injured in gang violence in front of USD ATM

A 23-year-old man was injured in a case of gang violence in front of the USD ATM located in Boduthakurufaanu Magu, marking the second case of gang violence in the capital Male’ City in one week.

The police confirmed the crime took place at approximately 4:19 pm on Tuesday. No arrests have been made, as of yet.

The crime was caught on video by a bystander and shows a gang of at least seven men setting upon a young man – the 23-year-old victim.

He is punched and thrown to the ground, and the attackers proceed to kick him as he lays on the ground.

The attackers are seen getting on motorbikes and fleeing the scene when a policeman comes and intervenes.

It marked similarity to a case of gang violence in front of the Foreign Ministry headquarters on January 9. The attack, too, was caught on video by a bystander.

At the beginning of the 49-second video, a man is heard declaring the name of a local “gang” and calling for members associated with the “gang” to roam around somewhere else. It followed the sight of a young man – later identified by the police as a 19-year-old - being ganged up on by a group of men who beat him with their fists and kicked him. A motorcycle carrying two more men are seen deliberately ramming into the teen.

The attackers flee with the arrival of a police officer, and the victim is seen pulling himself up off the ground and walking away.

Total eight suspects have been arrested in connection to the case.
