A team of officials from the opposition coalition - made up of PPM and PNC – have departed on a tour of L. Atoll to rile up support for their candidates in the upcoming Local Council Elections.
Speaking to press prior to boarding a plane to L. Atoll last Sunday, PNC leader Abdul Raheem Abdulla (Adhurey) said that PPM-PNC campaign teams were already active in Addu City, G. A. Atoll, G. Dh. Atoll, and Th. Atoll.
“We are presently working on preparations for the upcoming Local Council Elections and gathering signatures for the petition calling for the release of President Yameen,” said Adhurey.
Another campaign team is scheduled to depart to M. Atoll this Monday.
Adhurey said that the opposition coalition was dispatching the teams to the atolls to “work as closely with the people as possible”.
“We want to reinforce our party spirit in the atolls, boost up support for President Yameen, work on the petition demanding President Yameen’s release, and prepare for the Local Council Elections,” said Adhurey.
Senior PPM-PNC officials had recently paid a visit to Dh. Kudahuvadhoo – a visit which Adhurey said they made at the invitation of the island’s residents to take part in a rally to call for Yameen’s release.
He said that that the campaign tours had been highly effective in boosting support for the opposition, and that “hundreds” of new members had joined opposition.
Adhurey said that 951 from Dh. Kudahuvadhoo had signed the opposition’s petition in just two days. He said he was confident the opposition would gain a majority at the Kudahuvadhoo Council.
Local Council Elections is scheduled to be held on April 4.
