The Progressive Congress Coalition, made up of PPM and PNC have announced the candidacy of former Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for the upcoming Local Council Elections.

Muizzu, who serves as one of PPM’s deputy leaders, is running for Mayor of Male’ City.

His candidacy was announced during the rally held by the Progressive Congress Coalition to protest against the five-year prison sentence issued against PPM leader, former Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom last Sunday.

PNC leader, Abdul Raheem Abdulla (Adhurey) said that the capital, Male’ City needed to undergo a great change, but that the change would only be possible by making the city “Muizzu”. He said that the city needed to be made “Muizzu” at any cost.

“I announce tonight that Dr. Mohamed Muizzu shall, god willing, run for Mayor of Male’ in the upcoming Local Council Elections. He shall, god willing, succeed in becoming the Mayor of Male’,” said Adhurey.

He said that Muizzu’s campaign slogan would be “to make Male’ Muizzu”.

Adhurey said that the Progressive Congress Coalition was well-prepared for the upcoming elections, and working with passion on making all the administrative arrangements.

He said that the coalition would begin its campaign tours to the atolls soon.

“We will not go to the islands and say we share the same ideology as one group or another. We don’t want to win the Council Elections through trickery and deceit. PPM-PNC will win the upcoming Local Council Elections with the love and respect of the people,” said Adhurey.

Local Council Elections is scheduled to be held on April 4, and will see the Maldivian people elect 980 councilors for island councils, atoll councils and city councils across the nation.

The recent legislative amendment to reserve one-third of council seats for women means 384 of the councilors will be women.

Progressive Congress Coalition has announced the intention of running for all seats under PPM.
