All calls to Ooredoo network made free in wake of tragic fire

Ooredoo Maldives has announced the decision to make all calls to the Ooredoo network free this Saturday in response to the tragic fire which left one dead and hundreds homeless in Male’.

The fire originated from a chemical storage facility located in H. Thilafushi, and ended with the destruction of total four chemical storage facilities and six residential buildings last Friday.

Ooredoo says it made the decision to make calls free in order to assist their customers reach out to their friends and family in the wake of the tragedy.

The telecom company has also made Viber calls and messaging, as well as Twitter access free for this Saturday to allow customers to reach out to their loved ones who use other networks or live abroad.

433 people affected by the fire have registered with the National Disaster Management Authority for assistance.

Temporary housing is being provided in Kalaafaanu School and Imaduddin School, and officials from NDMA note considerable donations being made from private business and members of the general public to assist the people affected by the fire.

The tragic fire resulted in the death of Aishath Shauna, 46, from Th. Buruni who had been residing in H. Randhuvaani Aage – the building opposite to H. Thilafusheegee - which housed the chemical storage facility the fire originated from.
