Appeal proceedings following the Criminal Court’s acquittal of the suspects in the 2011 murder of Ahsan Basheer from S. Hithadhoo is scheduled to begin at the High Court on Monday, July 29.

Ahsan was stabbed to death at the crossroads of Majeedhee Magu and Alikileygefaanu Magu in Male’ City by two men on a motorcycle at approximately 3:20 am on March 17, 2011.

Two men stood trial for the murder. They are:

  • Ibrahim Shahum Adam, G. Gozy, Male’ City
  • Hassan Shimaz Mohamed, Ma. Venusthari, Male’ City

Shahum was charged with premeditated murder and Shimaz was charged as an accomplice to premeditated murder.

However, the Criminal Court, on November 20, 2014 issued both Shamun and Shimaz acquittals based on lack of sufficient evidence by the State prosecution.

The ruling was appealed by the State prosecution over one year later in February, 2016.

Though the Criminal Court acquitted Shahum of Ahsan’s murder, he is currently serving life imprisonment for the death of Mohamed Hussain from M. Beautyflower in Male’ City at the Maziya turf in 2010.

Meanwhile, Shimaz, who had no other convictions against him, walked free.
