Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is set to arrive in Maldives this Saturday in his first trip after the elections, will be delivering his address to the Maldivian Parliament - the People’s Majlis – in Hindi.

The Parliament is scheduled to host Modi at 6:45 pm.

Modi will deliver his address in Hindi – the most common official language in India, and the language of choice for the Indian Prime Minister during state events.

The secretariat of the Parliament has made arrangements so parliamentarians can listen to the translation of his address in real time.

Arrangements are also being made to deliver the translation in real time to viewers as his address is telecasted to the masses through the national television channel – Television Maldives (TVM).

The report has been confirmed by Media Director at the Parliament, Hassan Ziyau.

“PM Modi will deliver his address in Hindi. We are looking to see if we can deliver the translation with the live feed to TV stations. The parliamentarians will hear the translation in real time for sure,” said Ziyau.

Modi will become the second foreign leader to address the Maldivian Parliament, following in the footsteps of former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2011.

The official reception to welcome Modi to Maldives will be held at the Republic Square at 4 pm.

Modi, during his visit, will engage in official talks with the Maldivian government, and exchange six key documents – some of which include funding for economic projects and grant assistance.

He will conclude his visit and depart from Maldives on Sunday morning.

Modi’s visit to Maldives marks his first trip abroad following his party, BJP’s victory in national elections in May.

Modi, in a short statement, said that the visit was testament to importance India placed on its ties with Maldives.

“We regard the Maldives as a valued partner with whom we share deep bonds of history and culture. Our bilateral relations with the Maldives have been greatly strengthened in the recent past. I am confident that my visit will further deepen our multifaceted partnership,” wrote Modi.
