Parliamentary candidates urged to submit financial declaration by May 5

Candidates who contested the parliamentary election on Saturday, April 6, have been instructed by Elections Commission to submit their financial declaration by May 5 at the latest.

General Elections Act requires candidates who contest national elections to disclose their financial declaration within 30 days after polling day.

The period for candidates of the parliamentary election ends on May 6.

Speaking during a press conference this Thursday, President of EC, Ahmed Shareef said that though the 30-day period ends on May 6 – the date falls on the first day of Ramadan – a public holiday.

The said that the commission has therefore set the deadline for submission of financial declaration to May 5.

Shareef, during the press conference, urged all candidates to pay special attention to submitting their financial declaration on time. He stressed that the responsibility of submitting the financial declaration fell on the candidates and their representatives.

386 candidates contested the parliamentary election. All candidates, regardless of win or loss at the election, are required by law to disclose their financial declaration detailing their campaign expenditure.
