MVR 79 million generated as green tax in February

Maldivian government earned MVR 79 million as income from green tax in February. 

In a statistic report published by the Finance Ministry of Maldives about green tax, most of the income generated were from Kaaf Atoll. MVR 27.92 were generated green tax from the resorts, hotels and guest houses in Kaafu Atoll. 

Kaafu Atoll has the most number of tourist beds in the country, including tourist resorts, guest houses and hotels. 

MVR 26 million was generated from the resorts of Kaafu Atoll as green tax. The hotels in the atoll generated MVR 160,020 and MVR 849,794 were generated respectably from the hotels and guest houses in the Kaafu Atoll. 

A. Dh. Atoll generated the second highest income from green tax with MVR 9 million and B. Atoll generated the third highest income with MVR 6 million. 

Tourist resorts paid MVR 72 million as green tax during the month of February. Guest Houses paid MVR 2 million while Hotels paid MVR 1 million as green tax during February.

A fee of USD 6 is imposed on tourists staying in resorts per night and USD 3 per night are taken in Guest Houses as green tax. 

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that he would make sure that the money earned from green tax is allocated to fund environmental protection programs and projects, and vowed to prove it within the first 100 days of his presidency.
