Reeko Moosa running for Gan constituency as an independent candidate

Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Hulhuhenveyru MP Reeko Moosa Manik has made the decision to contend for the L. Gan constituency in the Parliamentary Elections as an independent candidate.

Moosa, who left the former ruling party, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) last week, has confirmed his decision to run for Gan as an independent candidate to ‘Sun’.

Moosa said his decision was based on the fact that his career as a parliamentarian began as a representative for L. Atoll. And because of the enormous work he did as a representative of L. Atoll at the time.

Moosa was elected to Parliament for the first time, in 2004, as the MP for Hadhunmathi constituency – which included L. Gan.

He said that the Gan constituency was previously represented by an opposition MP resulting in the constituency being grossly neglected by the previous administration. Moosa said he wished to cooperate with the current administration and develop the constituency.

“One of the biggest complaints by constituents of Gan was the lack of development to the constituency in the past five years in comparison to Fonadhoo constituency. Gan was represented by an opposition MP the last five years. An I contend for Gan constituency, I plan on developing the Gan constituency by cooperating with the current administration,” said Moosa.

He said that he would have to work as an opposition MP if he had decided to contend on behalf of his former party, PPM.

He said he did not wish to work in opposition to the current administration.

Moosa had joined PPM after fell out with his former party Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) where he served as Chairperson, when he announced his in intention to run for presidency.

His current constituency, the Hulhuhenveyru constituency, has been divided to form two constituencies – the Hulhumale’ constituency and the new West Henveyru constituency.

The next Parliament will have 87 seats.
