Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment hit the waves at the Raalhugandu last Friday to listen to the concerns of local surfers.

Speaking to ‘Sun’ after his meeting and bodyboarding session with local surfers, Minister Ahmed Mahloof said the surfing community has a lot of concerns including the iron rods that remain at Raalhugandu surf point, and the lack of office space.

Mahloof said he was committed to supporting the local surfing community and develop the sport.

He said that the government will introduce sports tourism to Maldives and increase participation in international surfing competitions.

Mahloof also promised to help create more Maldivian champions in watersports.

Raalhugandu was only recently opened after it was shut down for construction of the Sina-Male’ Bridge. Iron rods used for construction of the bridge remain submerged under water, making surfing in the area treacherous.
