Moon-sighting for Eid al-Fitr on June 13

Moon-sighting to determine the Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Shawwal, will be carried out on June 13, says Department of Judicial Administration (DJA).

DJA announced in a statement that the department, magistrate courts, city councils, atoll councils, island councils and district officers will remain open from 5:30 pm on June 13 (Ramadan 29) until a decision is made.

The DJA urged anyone who views the new moon for Shawwal to present himself to the DJA (if in Male’ City) or a magistrate court or island council or district office (if in atolls) and share the information as soon as possible.

As per normal practice, any person or persons who view the new moon are required to testify in front of a judge at a court (if in Male’ City), in front of a judge at a magistrate court (if in the atolls), or in front of the person in charge of the island council or district office in islands with no magistrate courts.

DJA announced that people who come in to testify regarding the moon sighting will be reimbursed the cost they bear for taxi to come in to testify and return home afterwards.

According to the calendar, June 13 is the 29th of Ramadan and June 14 is the 30th of Ramadan.
