Parliament approves Shareef for Elections Commission

People’s Majlis has provided its approval to Managing Director of Fenaka Corporation Ahmed Shareef – President’s nominee for the vacant seat at Elections Commission (EC).

The Majlis voted on Shareef during the sitting held this Tuesday morning.

The sitting was boycotted by opposition lawmakers. 33 lawmakers voted in approval of Shareef, and one lawmaker voted against – Thulhaadhoo MP Nazim Rashad.

Shareef received 77.3 percent marks from the Committee of Independent Institutions of Majlis, 2.3 percent more than the 75 percent minimum requirement.

Shareef, who currently serves as MD of Fenaka Corporation previously also served as Secretary-General of EC.

He served as MP for Thimarafushi constituency after winning a by-election during the last parliamentary term, but lost at re-elections in 2014.

Application for EC membership was opened after the former President of EC, Ahmed Sulaiman resigned from his post in February.
