Police fine young man for driving with front wheel raised; bike seized

A young man has been fined for driving with the front wheel of his motorcycle lifted off the ground in a dangerous manner.

Police said they received reports at 10:30 pm on Friday of a motorcycle being driven recklessly. A police beat patrolling the area at the time spotted the vehicle and monitored its movements. According to police, the motorcycle was travelling south-north near Flat 12 on Kinbigasmagu when the rider raised the front wheel and continued driving in a hazardous manner.

The 20-year-old rider was stopped, fined, and his motorcycle taken into custody.

Since the implementation of the new Road Traffic Act, police have taken action against more than 600 individuals, and over 180 vehicles have been impounded. The Act imposes significantly higher penalties on violators, including fines of MVR 1,000, MVR 1,500, and MVR 2,000 for driving without a licence, depending on the number of offences. It also introduces fines ranging from MVR 100,000 to MVR 500,000 for reckless or dangerous driving.

Dangerous road accidents continue to rise in Male' city, and the number of fatalities has also increased.
