STELCO has now assumed electricity services across the northernmost and southernmost regions of the Maldives, following the decision to dissolve Fenaka Corporation.
Fenaka previously handled water and electricity services in dozens of islands, but on July 7, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced that STELCO would take over the company’s responsibilities. Since then, STELCO has been carrying out a phased takeover of Fenaka’s operations.
As part of this transition, STELCO officials visited Addu City on the 30th of last month and formally took over electricity services in the southernmost city. Speaking at the ceremony, Managing Director Dr. Ali Azwar noted that STELCO last provided electricity services in Addu 17 years ago. He described the President’s decision as a crucial step toward ensuring reliable and sustainable service for residents. The team also visited Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo, officially assuming services in both islands.
On Friday, STELCO officials and MD travelled to Haa Alifu Atoll, the northernmost region of the country, to begin service integration there as well. The team inspected the Thuraakunu powerhouse and RO plant, assessing the condition of electricity and water services and discussing ways to strengthen and expand service delivery. After Thuraakunu, the officials visited Hoarafushi, where they reviewed the progress of the powerhouse and bottling plant.
