From a former accident at sea: Grand Park Kodhipparu PKD-19 speedboat.
Two people were injured this evening in a collision between a speedboat and a boat off the coast of Vilimale’.
Police said the incident was reported at around 4:50 pm, noting that the captain and a crew member aboard the speedboat sustained injuries. No serious injuries were reported. Both vessels suffered various forms of damage, according to police.
Authorities are now investigating the incident further.
Marine accidents, though infrequent, have previously resulted in loss of life and significant damage to property. The Marine Police and MNDF Coast Guard work jointly to maintain maritime safety and security, given the risks posed by accidents in a country heavily dependent on sea transport.
The Marine Police note that common causes of marine accidents include operating vessels at high speed near shorelines and quays, navigating in rough seas or low‑visibility conditions without heeding weather advisories, and failing to maintain engines and steering systems. Inadequate safety equipment, such as lifejackets and fire extinguishers, and failure to use required navigation lights at night also contribute to such incidents.
To reduce accidents, Marine Police conduct patrols in Male’ and surrounding atoll waters, stopping vessels to check safety equipment and captain licences. They also take action against illegal operators, raise awareness among boat owners and captains, and carry out emergency rescue operations in collaboration with the MNDF Coast Guard.
