For four years, the then interim secretary general of V. Rakeedhoo Council drew two salaries in addition to the pay for his temporary SG post, according to a compliance audit released by the Auditor General’s Office.

The report states that MVR 9,900 was deposited into the SG’s bank account every month from 2022 until November last year. Although the payments were recorded as wages for maintaining the island mosque, auditors found no documentation assigning him any such additional duty.

Over the past four years, a total of MVR 337,600 was deposited into the employee’s account as mosque wages, with MVR 118,800 paid last year alone. In addition, MVR 79,771 was deposited into the temporary SG’s account as money owed to other individuals by the council, again without supporting records.

The audit notes that no invoices, beneficiary lists or payment records were available at the council office for any of these transactions.

The Auditor General’s Office has recommended recovering all funds deposited into the SG’s personal account. It further advised referring the matter to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to investigate the irregular withdrawal of two salaries and recover losses sustained by the state.
