Two motorcycles were involved in a dangerous collision early Wednesday morning on Nirolhu Magu in Hulhumalé Phase II.
According to the Police, the accident was reported at approximately 2:55am on Wednesday morning. Five individuals sustained injuries of varying severity in the collision and are currently undergoing medical treatment.
The Police noted that three of the injured individuals were initially treated at Hulhumalé Hospital before being transferred to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for further care. Arrangements are also being made to transfer the remaining two injured individuals to IGMH.
Sun has learned that one of the motorcycles involved accident in Hulhumalé was carrying three individuals with the said motorcycle, crashing into another, carrying two individuals.
In this regard, the motorcycle carrying the three people had reportedly been driven dangerously around Hulhumalé throughout last night. Particularly, the Police had received reports of the motorcycle being driven at high speed against the flow of traffic on a one-way road.
The accident is under further investigation by the Police.
The frequency of serious road accidents in the Greater Malé Area has recently seen a concerning rise. In response, the newly enacted Land Transport Act, which criminalizes reckless and negligent driving and introduces stringent penalties for offenders, came into effect this month.
