A young man arrested in connection with a drug-related case has claimed that the narcotics found inside his underwear did not belong to him.
According to a Criminal Court order, the 22-year-old Maldivian man was arrested on suspicion of drug use, possession, sale, and trafficking.
Although the illicit substances were discovered inside his underwear, the suspect denied ownership of the items. However, the court found that sufficient evidence had been presented to substantiate the allegations against him. The evidence included an intelligence report and a statement provided by an officer who attended the scene.
As a result, the Criminal Court ordered that the individual remain in custody for 15 days.
There have been multiple cases in the past involving attempts to smuggle narcotics into the Maldives by concealing them on one’s body.
Police statistics show that 2,019 drug-related cases have been reported to the institution so far this year.
