Man arrested for sexually assaulting elderly woman during prayer remanded for 15 days

The suspect arrested for threatening and sexually assaulting a 72-year-old woman as she prayed at her home in R. Angolhitheemu has been remanded in custody for 15 days.

Police said the case was reported at 8:30 pm on Monday. The victim, who sustained injuries in the attack, received treatment at the Angolhitheemu Health Centre and was later discharged.

A 44-year-old Maldivian man was arrested under a court order at around 10 pm on Monday. Police said the court has now ordered him to be held in custody for 15 days.

The woman was allegedly sexually assaulted while performing the Isha prayer in her bedroom.

Police said they are treating the case as a serious crime, and that investigations are ongoing.
