Shahid wins Sun Poll on best choice for MDP’s 2028 presidential candidate

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s former president Abdulla Shahid has won the poll conducted by Sun Online on the best choice for the main opposition party’s candidate for the 2028 presidential elections.

The results of the poll, conducted for a week from September 21 to 11:59 pm Monday, places Shahid in the lead with 58.3 percent of votes.

Former Maldivian leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who held office from 2018-2023, placed second with 16 percent of votes, while former president Mohamed Nasheed, the current chairperson of MDP, placed third with 13.9 percent of votes.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ahmed Shameed, the incumbent parliamentary representative for South Hulhumale’, secured 6.7 percent of votes, while Fayyaz Ismail, former economic minister and chairperson of MDP won 4.9 percent, and former Maldivian vice president Faisal Naseem won 0.3 percent.

The poll attracted a lot of attention, as candidates campaign for the upcoming elections.

The MDP is set to hold its congress on October 1, and its presidential primaries early next year.
