FDC gives flats a month to fix altered balconies

The Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) has given residents one month to restore illegally altered utility balconies in its housing units to meet regulatory standards.

Earlier this month, FDC Managing Director Hamdhan Shakeel said the corporation was discussing measures to identify units housing children and people with special needs in the Amaan Udhares and Amaan Dhoadhi towers, and to ensure the safety and security of all residents.

On Monday evening, FDC announced that all utility balconies must be brought back into compliance with the corporation’s standards. Residents are prohibited from making any additional unauthorized changes.

The corporation has approved only two types of modifications for balconies and windows: grill and net fixing, and sliding louvre fixing.

FDC has given residents until October 28 to correct any illegal alterations. The corporation said fines and other action will be imposed if the changes are not rectified within the deadline.

Meanwhile, the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) is installing railings on windows and balconies of the towers. The measures follow two recent incidents in which children fell from flats in Hulhumale' Phase II.

A two-year-old girl died after falling from a STELCO flat on March 3, while a 16-year-old girl was injured after falling from an Aman Udhares Tower the previous day.
