Two apartments ordered by the Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) to vacate their units for failing to pay rent have now begun settling their dues after receiving the formal notice.

FDC Managing Director Hamdhan Shakeel told Sun that the two apartments instructed to vacate had not paid any rent since the day the units were handed over. He said the tenants only initiated payment after the order to vacate the premises was issued.

Hamdhan said other apartments that have received notices for non-payment are also approaching the corporation to inquire about how to arrange their outstanding payments.

In a statement issued four days ago, the FDC said the action was taken in accordance with the procedures stipulated in the pre-agreement for handing over the 4,000 housing units. Before terminating any agreement, the corporation provides repeated opportunities within a 135-day window to clear dues. During this period, two payment-default notices are sent, followed by the required 30-day notice before termination. Notices are delivered through the Fahi portal, SMS, email and written communication.

However, the FDC said the agreements for the two units were ultimately canceled, and the tenants were ordered to vacate within 15 days of receiving the notice. Their access to the FDC portal was also suspended.

The corporation said the step was taken to uphold the principles of the agreement and ensure equal application of those principles to all parties. It also urged the public to pay monthly rent and maintenance fees regularly to maintain service quality.

The FDC has developed 4,000 flats across 32 towers, including Aman Dhoadhi and Aman Udhares. Non-payment of rent in social housing units has long remained a persistent issue in the Male' area.
