Market diversification offers significant potential for Maldivian tourism, with Halal tourism representing a crucial area for strategic growth, says Abdulla Yasir, CEO and Managing Director of Visit Maldives Corporation.
He made the remarks in a message on a special supplement published by the Tourism Ministry on Sunday occasion of World Tourism Day 2026, which is being marked under the theme “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism.”
In his message, Yasir said that the past year served as a clear reminder of the importance of resilience.
“Geopolitical disruptions across the Middle East impacted critical air corridors connecting the Maldives to key international markets, creating distinct operational challenges. Yet, these circumstances spurred creative agility, prompting us to explore new avenues to engage global audiences and reinforce our presence worldwide,” he said.
Yasir said that digital transformation has been central to this movement.
“Through research-led campaigns and elevated digital engagement, we dynamically adapted to changing traveler behaviors to keep the Maldives visible and compelling. A prime example was our nationwide SeaSational Summer campaign, which unified industry efforts, events, and authentic experiences under a single seasonal platform, solidifying the Maldives’ standing as a premier year-round destination,” he said.
Yasir said that looking ahead, market diversification offers significant potential, with Halal tourism representing a crucial area for strategic growth.
“As a Muslim nation, Islamic traditions are inherently woven into everyday life. The widespread availability of Halal dining, prayer facilities, and faith-conscious hospitality allows travelers to seamlessly enjoy our natural beauty, rich culture, and island experiences while honoring their faith, providing a powerful baseline to expand our reach in this global segment,” he said.
Yasir stressed that sustaining Maldives’ competitive edge will require continuous innovation, digital evolution, and deep cross-industry collaboration.
“By building resilience together, we ensure the Maldives remains a resilient leader on the world stage,” he said.
Concluding his message, Yasir expressed gratitude to “everyone whose dedication drives Maldivian tourism forward and shares the Sunny Side of Life with the world.”
