Pres. Muizzu: Maldives and Malaysia agree to negotiate Preferential Trade Agreement

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Tuesday, revealed that the Maldives and Malaysia have agreed to begin negotiations on a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) aimed at further strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries.

The President made the announcement during a joint press statement following official talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the President’s Office.

Speaking on bilateral trade relations, President Muizzu said the discussions focused on practical measures to enhance economic ties, particularly in the areas of trade and investment.

"Most significantly, we have agreed to commence negotiations on a 'Preferential Trade Agreement,' which will pave the way for new opportunities for businesses in both countries," the President stated.

President Muizzu also reaffirmed that the Maldives remains open to investment from the Malaysian government and private sector across key areas of the economy. He encouraged Malaysian investors to explore strategic sectors including renewable energy, digital infrastructure, construction, and Islamic finance.

Emphasizing the strength of the bilateral relationship, President Muizzu said the ties between the two countries extend beyond friendship, describing them as a brotherhood united by shared objectives. He also expressed appreciation to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and the Malaysian government for their continued support and cooperation with the Maldives.
