Foundation stone laid for the grand mosque in Hulhumale' Phase II

The foundation stone of the largest mosque and Islamic civilisation centre in the Maldives was laid on Sunday.

The foundation stone was placed by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, HDC Managing Director Ali Zuhair, Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to the Maldives Yahya Hassan Al-Gahtani, and Bandar Abdullah Al-Rajihi, CEO of Al Rajhi Company.

The ceremony was held to mark the 900th anniversary of the Maldives’ conversion to Islam. The mosque will be built in Hulhumale' Phase II.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Shaheem said the mosque had been envisioned in the development plan for Hulhumale' 20 years ago. He noted that the mosque was initially planned for land now used as the city’s central park.

Shaheem thanked the President for giving special attention to the project this year.

He said the Islamic Civilisation Centre will include rooms and halls that explain how the Maldives embraced Islam and how Islamic civilisation developed over the past 900 years. The centre is designed to be a place visited by tourists.

The mosque will accommodate at least 10,000 worshippers. Shaheem assured that he would work hard to complete the mosque within two years.
